EACME’s Early Career Bioethicists

EACME is strongly committed to supporting the next generation of bioethicists. If you are an early career bioethicist, this page explains some of the opportunities that EACME makes available to you.

If you have a suggestion for how EACME can further support early career bioethicists, or you are interested in organizing an EACME early career activity yourself, please do not hesitate to contact us (see below for contacts).

Are you an early career bioethicist?

EACME focuses on the broad field of “bioethics”, which is populated by people from diverse backgrounds, contexts, cultures, disciplines and professions. This means that people may be engaged in the theory and practice of bioethics in different ways and in many different places. EACME’s early career bioethicists will reflect that diversity: you are likely to be undertaking a postgraduate course (such as a Master’s or a PhD) or, having graduated, be in the early years of your career (for example, as an academic researcher, educator, healthcare professional, clinical ethicist, or a mixture of those).

Some of the opportunities (below) have specific eligibility requirements but, generally, if you consider yourself to be an early career bioethicist, then this is the webpage for you, and we would be happy to hear from you!

What opportunities does EACME offer to early career bioethicists?

EACME and its members are keen to support early career bioethicists. Amongst the opportunities currently available are:

EACME Annual Conference. The EACME annual conference always welcomes early career bioethicists – you can submit an abstract to present your work, or simply come along to meet colleagues from across Europe (and the world). At every conference, we arrange opportunities for early career bioethicists to meet and network: for example, we regularly host an informal lunch meeting. The conference is widely recognised as a friendly and supportive environment, and we look forward to meeting you there!

EACME Paul Schotsmans Prize for young talented scholars. This prize (€500) is for PhD students and is linked to the annual conference. You can read more about the prize and the application process here.

EACME Visiting Scholarship Exchange Programme. This award (€1,500) is also for young researchers (defined as Master’s students, PhD students, or early post-doctoral researchers). You can read more about the prize and the application process here.

EACME Collaboration Awards. This award (€1,000) supports collaboration between EACME centres. The award is open to EACME centres, so is not restricted to early career bioethicists – but you are very welcome to apply. You can read more about the award and the application process here.

EACME Early Career Bioethicist Webinars. EACME aims to host two webinars a year, in which early career bioethicists can come together. These webinars typically run in the Spring and the Summer. The agenda is flexible: sometimes there might be a presentation(s), other times the webinar will simply provide an opportunity to meet (online) and talk with other early career bioethicists, from across Europe. The meetings will be advertised through the EACME News and on our website. Each meeting is designed to be a welcoming place – we’d love to see you there.

EACME Newsletter and bulletins. EACME regularly publishes a newsletter (three times a year), plus weekly bulletins (EACME News). Both feature news from the bioethics world, job or study opportunities, events, and articles. We very much encourage early career bioethicists to share their news items and contribute articles to the newsletter. You can access the archive of newsletters here.

I would like to get involved – who do I contact?

Provided that your Centre is a member of EACME, you can hear about emerging opportunities in our weekly bulletin and in our regular newsletter – for example, this is where EACME advertises PhD positions and forthcoming webinars for early career bioethicists. (If your Centre would like to become a member, please direct your colleagues to this form.)

But EACME does not only want you to hear from us – we want to hear from you!

If you are an early career bioethicist, and would like to get in touch with EACME about opportunities and activities for early career bioethicists, please note the following contacts:

If you would like to advertise something (such as an event) in the weekly bulletin, please contact the EACME administrator, Angelique Heijnen: a.heijnen@maastrichtuniversity.nl

  • If you would like to publish an article in the newsletter, please contact the editor, Dr Caroline Brall: carobrall@googlemail.com
  • If you would like to inquire about upcoming webinars for early career bioethicists, please contact Dani O’Connor: do17934@bristol.ac.uk
  • If you would like to make any suggestions about how EACME could further support early career bioethicists, please contact the chair of the Board, Professor Richard Huxtable: r.huxtable@bristol.ac.uk

The first webinar took place on July 27 at 15.00 – 17.00.
